How To Clean A Memory Foam Mattress

Posted on September 30, 2022

A memory foam mattress can’t take as much moisture as other mattress types, so the cleaning process can be difficult. But don’t worry, because there are different solutions that you can try on your San Bernardino home’s mattress.

You should be careful when applying any new cleaning product to any new surface, as you can cause damage without realizing it. Always test any of these options on a small part of your mattress before committing fully.

Vacuum

Let’s start with the easy solution – vacuuming. If your stain is new, try this immediately. Vacuum up as much as you can before it sets into the mattress. And if the stain’s old, you may still be able to vacuum some of it.

You should try to remove any loose parts of the stain before they, too, set further into the mattress. It may help get an old one a bit wet before you vacuum. However, most cleaning professionals will warn that vacuuming is rarely enough to preserve any fabric.

Detergent

If you can’t vacuum out everything (which, in all likelihood, you can’t), it’s time to add a mild detergent to the stain. This shouldn’t be too hard on the fabric, and it may be able to eliminate whatever stained your San Bernardino home’s mattress.

Be sure to blot, not scrub, with a soft sponge or cloth, so that you don’t tear the fabric. After that, you can try vacuuming again. The secondary vacuuming is important to prevent restaining. And another piece of advice, that also applies to carpet cleaning, you want to remove moisture to avoid mold growth.

Baking soda

Baking soda is another relatively mild cleaning solution to try. Baking soda can be helpful if your stain is still wet, as it can absorb stains very well. It’s known for working well on urine and other odorous stains too.

Simply sprinkle the baking soda over the stain and let it sit. You should try waiting about half an hour at first, but if that doesn’t work, you can experiment with different times. Afterward, it’s time to pick up your trusty vacuum again.

Mild fabric cleaner

You may have other mild cleaning solutions around your San Bernardino home that you can try out. Some specialty mattress cleaners exist and may be worth getting, as long as they’re made to withstand memory foam.

Other fabric cleaners can work as well, though. As always, you must be easy on your memory foam mattress as you do this. Blot and spray gently.

Vinegar with water

Finally, as a last-resort cleaning solution, you can try diluting some white vinegar in water. White vinegar is typically not harmful but can be in certain situations. Remember to always test cleaners beforehand.

Use one part white vinegar to three parts warm water for the best results. Carefully blot the white vinegar into the mattress, and leave plenty of room for everything to dry afterward.

Finally, you can always hire a professional San Bernardino mattress cleaner if all else fails. It’s also a great option if you’re worried about trying to clean your memory foam mattress yourself. Our San Bernardino professionals know how to get your mattress cleaned.
