How To Clean Your Carpet After A Messy Thanksgiving

Posted on November 25, 2022

While spending time with your family can be fun, sometimes things can get pretty messy. Maybe a younger cousin hasn’t developed their fine motor skills yet, or perhaps a clumsy uncle knocked something over. Whatever the case, your Thanksgiving has ended in one or more stains. Not to worry – here’s how to deal with common Thanksgiving stains.

Turkey grease

First, get any solids left from the turkey off of the carpet. Sprinkle on some baking soda and brush it into the fibers. Wait 15 minutes before vacuuming. Next, blot a safe cleaning solvent onto the stain. If you don’t have a cleaning solvent, try one tablespoon of dish soap, two cups of warm water, and one tablespoon of ammonia.

Potatoes

Start by getting as much of the potato out of the carpet as possible. Be careful not to smear it any further. You can use a dull knife to help you out. Mix a tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of warm water and put it into a spray bottle. Spray it on the stain. Finally, blot the stain with a clean towel while being careful not to rub. And in cases where you have sat on the potatoes, mashing them further, you may need upholstery cleaning.

Gravy

Be sure to blot away any gravy still present on the carpet, and then pour some cornstarch on top of the stain. After letting the cornstarch sit for fifteen minutes to half an hour, mix a tablespoon of dish soap, a tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water and blot that onto the stain.

Cranberry sauce

First, perform preliminary blotting with a clean towel and plain water. Once the stain stops lifting, mix a tablespoon of dish soap, half a cup of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water and blot this solution onto the stain. But there is a good chance you will need a carpet cleaning service for cranberry stains.

Yams

Lift any remaining yams still sitting on your San Bernardino home’s carpet, using a dull knife if you have to. Mix a tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of warm water and add them to a spray bottle. Spritz this mixture onto the stain and blot away what’s left of it with a clean towel.

Dressing

Lift any excess salad dressing with a towel or knife. Pour cornstarch on the stain and brush it in. Let it sit for 15 minutes before vacuuming. Next, mix two cups of warm water, a tablespoon of dish soap, and a tablespoon of ammonia. Dab it onto the brush and scrub the stain again. Rinse with clean water and a clean towel.

Pumpkin Pie

First, lift any remaining pumpkin residue still sitting on the carpet. Mix two cups of warm water with one tablespoon of dish soap and blot it onto the remaining stain. Rinse whatever’s left with plain water and a clean towel.
